Southern Sugar Maple or Florida Maple

Identification:

-Opposite arrangement of stems and leaves-
-Simple leaf, 3-5-lobes
-Large seeded samara, persistent into winter.

Notes:  Once considered a subspecies of Sugar Maple (Acer saccharum), the Southern Sugar Maple is more adapted to the heat and humidity of the south.  Fall color is variable, ranging from brilliant reds and oranges to yellow.  A relatively new species in the nursery trade with limited availability.
